A comprehensive needs assessment and gap analysis clearly defines the current state of a RIM program, the gaps between it and a successful information governance program, examines the nature and causes of the gaps, and sets priorities for future action. The results of an assessment will provide justification for decisions to be made, and assist in making the case for action to management.
NetSmith Consultants’ needs assessment methodology includes a set of procedures employed systematically that begins with a definition of the project that includes setting objectives for the needs assessment, describing desired outcomes, identifying key stakeholders, and identifying existing issues and concerns; and formulating management and communication/reporting plans. We conclude with two deliverables: a Proposed Action Plan, and a Final Report.
The Proposed Action Plan builds a business case for taking action, with descriptions of the recommended solutions, the data and criteria used to arrive at the solution strategies, proposed timelines, and resource requirements.
The Final Report describes the needs assessment process, the amount and types of data collected, the major outcomes (identified needs/gaps), priority needs and the criteria used to determine the priorities, the Action Plan, and recommendations for future assessments.
